Linn Hi Fi

Linn Products was established in 1972 by Ivor Tiefenbrun. A Scottish company, described by themselves as a “precision engineering company who design and manufacture high end audio equipment”. Linn firmly believe that in order for a customer to select the right product, they must be listened to first. What suits one person may not suit another and listening first is the key to any successful purchase. This is one of the main reasons you will not find the majority of Linn products for sale over the internet.

Digital Streaming Products

Peoples listening habits have changed over the last five years. The vast majority of customers now have at least some of their music stored on their computers and also have mp3 players for music on the go. Music stored in mp3 format is convenient, normally does not take up much storage and sound good when used with a personal mp3 player. However, play the same music through a hifi system, and the disadvantages caused by compression becomes easily apparent. Compressing reduces the amount of information a track contains and hence completely changes the listening experience. Music sounds less clear, less precise and much more flat.

Linn have been watching the digital music playback market for some time, and have launched their range of DS or ‘Digital Streaming’ products, to fit into each range that they produce.

Their DS players play digitally stored music all the way from compressed music to full ‘studio master’ audio standard (this is of a higher standard than a normal CD). In fact, if you play a CD through your system, then rip the same CD in an uncompressed format, then play it back through a DS player, the sound produced is better than the original CD itself. The main reason for this is due to error rate, which is inherent in every CD player produced but not replicated by the CD mechanisms of a computer.

Sneaky DS

Every Linn product falls into three levels. Majik, Akurate and Klimax. However the DS range has a forth level, a level designed to make Linn products accessible to a larger customer base. The Sneaky DS is designed as a stand alone product, and is a digital streamer and integrated amplifier in one. All that is required is a pair of loudspeakers and either a computer or hard drive which to store your music on.

Majik DSI

The Majik DS-I is also designed to work as a stand alone unit. A Majik DS and integrated amplifier in one. The Majik DS-I is a talented all rounder, enabling you to plug in many sources such as your TV, games console, even your turntable. The Majik DS-I now also includes Linn’s Dynamik power supply. For a one box system it delivers astonishingly high levels of audio performance and works very well with any good quality loudspeakers.

Majik DS

The Majik DS is the first component in the range which is designed to work in conjunction with your existing hifi. The Majik DS has onboard volume control, and can be controlled via a multitude of applications, including your PC or Mac, or ipod touch.

Akurate DS

The Akurate DS sits in Linn’s most versatile range, producing a clear and dynamic sound befitting of the Akurate range. When playing your music back through the Akurate DS, customers can really appreciate the advancements in technology and with the multitude of control methods, customers can start to rediscover their music collection. Existing owners have often reported hearing subtle nuances they have never heard before in the original recordings played on their old good quality CD players.

Klimax DS

The Klimax DS is the flagship DS model by Linn. For the customer who wants a system without compromise, the Klimax DS has to be heard to be appreciated. The Klimax DS has no moving parts inside, and concentrates solely on reproducing your music in the most natural, life-like way possible. This is really the reference standard by which all other digital streamers are measured by.

Tuners

Linn produce one standalone tuner, the Akurate Tuner, featuring DAB and, as an option, a FM/AM tuner including RDS support. The internal workings of the Akurate Tuner include a specially designed digital to analogue converter for the very best possible sound reproduction available in a tuner, with each radio module separated to eradicate any risk of signal interference.

Linn Pre Amplifiers

Linn’s range of pre amplifiers are available again at three distinct levels of quality – good, better and best. It is well proven that better performance from any system is possible by having a component dedicated to a specific function only. The Linn pre amplifiers expertly carry out their processing tasks before outputting the signal to a dedicated power amplifier.

Klimax Kontrol

The Kimax Kontrol is machined from a single piece of aluminium. This method of construction offers many qualities apart from just great aesthetics. The recently redesigned Kontrol consists of four separate circuit boards with the shortest possible signal path, an auto ranging switch mode power supply, a unique audio board and the display and control boards. A plethora of outputs around the back allow you to connect the Kontrol using a number of different options, from balance to unbalanced outputs and inputs.

Akurate Kontrol

The Akurate Kontrol is not only an accomplished stereo pre amplifier, but also a full surround sound pre amp, with eight channels of top end performance. There are a total of six analogue and six digital inputs, including a phono stage, which would more than satisfy the needs of the normal user. 

Majik Kontrol 

The Majik Kontrol is based on the technology used by its bigger brothers, but is designed to be used with a more entry level system. Six analogue inputs are included, together with a phono stage are included. This product will be discontinued in spring 2010.

Linn Integrated Amplifiers

Majik-I
The Majik-I is Linn’s integrated amplifer offering combining technology gained in the production of the Linn’s Kontrol and power amplifiers. The Majik-I contains six analogue inputs including a configurable phono input. Linn’s silent switch mode power supply and Chakra amplification complete the package. The Majik-I is a fantastic product, which allows many customers the enjoyment associated from Linn’s component systems and it is very well priced at only £1,400. It has been purchased by many who use it along with source and speaker components from other manufacturers.

Linn Power Amplifiers
Linn produce power amplifiers at each level. With Linn, it is always advisable to start with or work towards a Linn Aktiv system. This will ensure that each frequency range (treble, mid, bass etc) in each speaker is driven by a single channel of amplification. The results of doing this include superb separation, incredible control and a wonderful balance to any type of music.   

Klimax Power Amplifiers
There are two amplifiers in the Klimax range, a mono and a two channel amplifier. As well as being a compact design, when space is at a premium, the Klimax power amplifiers are able to be wall mounted.

Klimax 500 Solo
The Klimax 500 Solo delivers 500 watts of amplification to one speaker or, when running in an Aktiv system, it supplies one frequency range to one driver in a speaker. Featuring balanced inputs for the best possible connection from your pre amplifier, the Klimax Solo really is the highest quality achievable from Linn and revered by many as one of the best value Mono amplifiers in the world.

Klimax Chakra 500 Twin 
The Chakra 500 Twin is Linn’s finest stereo power amplifier, featuring Linn’s switch mode power supply and patented Chakra amplifier technology. Again, balanced inputs ensure the signal path is the highest quality possible.

Akurate Power Amplifiers

Linn produce three version of their Akurate power amplifier, to fit precisely into your hifi or home cinema setup. Technology used in the top of the range Klimax models are passed down into the Akurate range. All Akurate power amplifiers are designed to accept Linn’s Aktiv crossover cards to further enhance the upgrade path.

All Akurate amplifiers are available with either RCA phono or XLR connection, to suit a vast number of different audio systems.

The Akurate comprises of the following models:

4200 - four channels each producing up to 200 watts of amplification.

3200 – three channels each producing up to 200 watts of amplification.

2200 – two channels each producing up to 200 watts of amplification.

Majik Power Amplifiers

The most comprehensive range of power amplifiers sits within the Majik range. Five models are produced within this range, featuring Linn’s switch mode power supply, RCA inputs, and of course, the ability to accept Aktiv crossover cards. All these amplifiers produce up to 100W of amplification.

Majik 2100: Two channels,

Majik 3100: Three channels

Majik 4100: Four channels

Majik 5100: Five channels

Majik 6100: Six channels

Linn Loudspeakers

The last link in any hi-fi chain are the loudspeakers. To complete your system, Linn produce a great number of different designs, each in a variety of finishes.

Klimax

Klimax loudspeakers represent all the technology and expertise that Linn have. Available in floor standing, stand mount and centre speaker and also available in traditional passive or aktiv form. The later incorporates Linn’s Chakra amplification process.

Klimax 350A – Is the pinnacle of Linn’s speaker offering, which is a fully aktiv floor standing loudspeaker. It produces a clarity of sound that is very hard to comprehend unless heard. At the Linn factory a pair of these speakers are used in one of the demonstration rooms. Hearing them is often one of the most memorable aspects of any factory visit.

Klimax 350 – Is the same as the 350A without the aktiv element.

Klimax 320A – The stand mount version, a fully aktiv four way design allows for a multitude of placement options.

Klimax 340A – When building the ultimate home cinema system, the 340A aktiv five way speaker should be your first choice in centre speaker.

Akurate Loudspeakers

There are a plethora of options within the Akurate range, ideal for both stereo application and full home cinema systems. Technologies such as Linn’s patented 3K driver array technology are utilised, creating a single uniform source for a pure natural reproduction. Every model is acoustically matched throughout the range to allow the customer to select the right size of speakers for their room.

The Akurate speakers are able to be made fully aktiv with amplifiers driving each separate channel.

The Akurate range features the 242, full range floor standing loudspeaker, the 212 compact bookshelf offering, and 225 centre speaker design.

Majik Loudpeakers

There are four versions of the Majik loudspeakers that utilise many of the features found on the Akurate and Klimax ranges.

Majik 140
The Majik 140 is a full four way floor standing speaker, featuring Linn’s 2K array. The speaker can be run in a variety of ways – single wire, bi-wire or fully Aktiv. To obtain the very best performance from this speaker it should be used within a Linn Aktiv system. However it is also a very easy speaker to drive and for that reason, it works very well indeed with any other quality electronics.

Majik 109
The Majik 109 book shelf speaker is a compact solution and a great introduction to Linn’s speakers. Available in five different finishes, the sound produced defies belief for such a small speaker. It works extremely well with any quality electronics, not just Linn. 

Majik 112
A fantastic centre speaker for locking the dialogue of any movie to the screen. 2K array speaker design is integrated into this speaker for clear precise channelling.
